Goodbye Wessex, hello outer space

Tonight's tabletop game is going to be the last Wessex game for a while.  I don't know if anybody has noticed or not, but I haven't run my Monday morning game for a couple weeks now.  School has gotten kinda hectic and I've needed my Monday mornings for homework.  I don't know when I will next run an online game.  It may be a spontaneous thing, with those of you on Google+ at 4:30am my time getting a "Hey, anyone want to play a game of ______?"

Meanwhile, I'm going to pitch to my Wednesday group a few session of Traveller.  I've long wanted to run Adventure 4: Leviathan, which involves giving the party command of a big merchant explorer and sending them into an unknown subsector.  Since it's a commercial interest providing the ship the scenario is an interesting hybrid of Star Trek's exploration/first contact ethos with Traveller's more grubby economic bent.

Thanks to all the super-cool players who made the Caves of Myrddin/Dungeons of Dundagel a hoot.  That dungeon still has a crapload of unexplored nooks and crannies (whole levels, in fact), so I will probably return to it some day.

  1. I have been missing the Wessex Updates! At least I have somewhere safe to store my FPCs over at Wike House.

I dearly hope you end up feeling inspired to run again! You should try to get some player time in as well, take a load off. It's nice to fluctuate between the two, I find.

  2. I only had one chance to get into the Caves, but it was a blast. Thank you for running, and letting us folks play in your world.

Good luck with the studies, and knock those exams dead!

  3. I realize you'll probably run this again (because you said you would) so this isn't a short-term request, but I wonder, if/when you ever are done running Dundagel if you could post about the way you went about creating, mapping and stocking it?

I second this question. I second it hard.

  5. Bummer! I'd wanted a second crack at that campaign! Definitely looking forward to its future return!

  6. Awesome that you are going to play Leviathan! It's probably the LBB adventure that most fired my imagination back in the day and has always been a goal of mine to actually play. I look forward to hearing about your game updates on this one.

  7. It's the hiatus of an era!
I hope I get to Wessex again. It was great fun. And my first bit of play in over a decade.

  8. You need to work on your kickstarter to publish the thing! :)

Is traveller something that is retro-cloned? Or is this one of those games where the rules don't matter.

    1. A) The amount of material I have totally ripped-off to populate the dungeon prohibits publishing it.

      2) Trav has not been retro-cloned, but it has been reprinted fairly recently as well as going through umpteen new editions. The current Mongoose version is pretty slick.

    2. I noticed yesterday you can actually purchase all of the old editions too: http://www.farfuture.net/.

    3. There's a SRD for Mongoose Traveller http://www.travellersrd.com/content/official/mongoose_traveller_srd/mongoose_traveller_srd_index.html

  9. Thanks for sharing your Wessex campaign. I'm going to miss it, but I'm sure I'm going to enjoy reading about your next campaign.

  10. I never had the opportunity to play in Wessex — as you note here, time is an atrocious thing — although I made a character in preparation. Judoc the Infirm will await the Caves' return with baited breath.

Out of curiosity, was the Wessex campaign based at all on "Hiero's Journey"?

I'm in the middle of reading it right now, and it seems to share some notable features with the campaign notes you've been sharing: based in an abbey, talking animals, evil wizards with extremely exotic personal styles, maybe more as I keep reading.

It must just be a fun coincidence then. I saw Hiero's Journey in the original Appendix N, and I've been reading it in my spare time. I've really been enjoying your campaign notes, and some things in the book reminded me of your campaign.

  12. Hiero's Journey by Sterling Lanier is famously known to be one of the most direct influences on Gamma World. (I can't see any correlation to Wessex other than Jeff's wild and wooly personal style.)

  13. Space? Did someone say space?

I was following the Wessex entries with my usual mix of genuine interest and morbid curiousity that I hold for most old school fantasy style gaming. An actual Jeff Rients Traveller campaign on the other hand intrigues me greatly. I look forward to reading more about this one to be sure.
