Jeff:That sounds like something one would find in either a later Complete book or some Forgotten Realms supplement, but that's just a guess on my part. Back in the day group used the first four Complete books (Fighter, Mage, Cleric, Thief) and not many other supps.
I've been approached to join a AD&D 2E game and wanted to play a dwarven rune caster. I remember there are published rules regarding runes and rune casting in 2E, but cannot for the life of me remember where. I've long since (unfortunately) disposed of all my 2E materials.

Runecaster class - HR1 Vikings Historical Sourcebook (a personal fave).
ReplyDeleteInternet Hivemind: Power down.
ReplyDeleteEntering: Lackadaisical phase.
Another version that is essentially the same as the HR1 book is in the Forgotten Realms sourcebook "Giantcraft"
ReplyDeleteI can tell you that it's not in the Dwarves' Handbook.
ReplyDeleteLackadaisical phase-shift complete.
Heed and Regard levels dropping to maintenance levels.
yup, HR1 Viking source book. they are really fun but i don't think the runes are 'balanced' or particularly useful to an adventurer though.I got halfway through writing up my own take on them using HR1 for reference, but none of my players were even slightly interested in the class.
ReplyDeleteGaz7 "The Northern Reaches" features a rune magic variant for Norse-style clerics. I know it's not 2e and I know it's not specifically for Dwarves, but it might be something you remembered from years ago.
ReplyDeleteGAZ7 includes some AD&D conversion info. The supplement came out in 1988 so I'm not 100% sure if it's referring to AD&D 1st or 2nd ed.
ReplyDeleteDragon Magazine #69 had a special section on runes...
ReplyDeleteHey Jeff, did you recieve the email I sent? No hurry on it, just wanted to know if I got the right address.
ReplyDeleteI see the Viking sourcebook all the time at used bookstores (Bookmans in Phoenix and Mesa AZ)
ReplyDeleteDragon Magazine #257 had an article on Dark Age Britain, featuring kits including a rune-themed magic-user. I don't recall if the kit allowed dwarves access to the class, but a DM could fiat it anyway.
