Dremelza's Front Room

Here's what the local witch in my campaign would sell to first level PCs, if I was running AD&D first edition. The numbers are based upon (but not identical to) those found in "Living in a Material World", Dragon #81 (January 1984).  Jamie Mal has the rundown on that piece here.  (For those of you playing at home, assume Dremelza is an MU7 and that Camelton is a village of a little less than a thousand inhabitants.)

Tomorrow I'd like to talk about material components, but today I just want to hit you with some raw data.

  1. These items hold promise even if they're not needed as spell components.

  2. Question: Is Dremelza looking to buy spell components? Samson and Sons Dungeon Salvage often has many bizarre items looking for a buyer.

  3. 10 gp for a small packet of dirt? Does this witch get her supplies from Games Workshop?

  4. ...also:

    Brazier: 1 Use

What is that thing made of? Wood?

  5. Yeah, dirt and shit, selling for 10 GP per small packet. All I need are some small packets and I'm ready to go into production. But you've got to have the discipline make your money and get out fast - you don't want to be around when the dirt and shit bubble bursts.

    1. The image of the dirt and shit bubble bursting is going to stay with me.

  6. I remember the summer of the Great Pestilence.

It drove shamrock prices through the roof!

You couldn't find them anywhere. It was a hard time to be a druid, what with the lack of mistletoe and all.

On the plus side, they were giving jars of grasshopper legs away for free that autumn...

  7. Apparently, you guys have never been in a New Age shop (thus, it's all hype for the guillible and the witch only shows her real wares to those who don't fall for it).

Or maybe . . . . this is specially cultivated and gathered dirt, you know. Maybe it's dirt taken from a grave at midnight on the night of a New Moon: as in, the dirt that actually touched the coffin! Thus, the witch had to dig it up in secret, lest she be found guilty of grave desecration!

On a more serious note, maybe it's dirt that's not available in the general area. My great grandfather was Cherokee and he used to treat sprained ankles with a apoultice made of East Texas red clay and vingear.

    Just a few thoughts.

  8. Twenty GP for a vial of water? What's she selling, Evian?
