What's the name of this game?

I'm making myself nuts over here.  A year or three back some game company came out with a fantasy wargame with lots of plastic figs in the 15mm to 20mm range.  One army was Egyptian, another was Celtic, etc.  It seemed pretty clear to me they were aiming for the wallets of the folks who liked BattleLore.  For the life of me I can't recall the name of the game or the publisher.

  2. I think the game you are looking for is Age of Mythology. It's been a while since I've played it, but it is a lot of fun.

  3. I've actually got an Egyptian army set. It's pretty cool. Never played it, just liked them.

  4. Arcane Legions I think. I did a pretty big review series on the game. I liked it, but few people played it, the company basically quit bothering with it, and the regions with players killed the game via finding the optimum forces and builds, sort of ruining it all with Math-Hammer as they call it.

A shame because the world concept is awesome, and the gameplay design is really good.

  5. It sounded to me like Hero Scape... I've seen it at our local Wal-Mart.

I used to love HeroScape as a kid, it's actually still sitting in my closet right now. I'm pretty sure my friends and I never played by the legitimate rules, however...

  7. Arcane Legions - what a mish-mash. A few of the guys locally got into it but I couldn't understand why they were wasting their money. As miniatures go there are far better 1) models and 2) rules. Wargods of Aegyptus, for example. Hail Caesar, for another. Any of the Two Hour Wargames rules. This game had Epic Fail written on it from Day One.

  8. Jeff...

We have an Arcane Legions demo kit at the store. If you want it, it's yours...

Our miniatures guys tried it, went "meh", then moved on...

  9. @Phf, it's likely because AL was an army-out-of-the-box style game, with both a standard set (unpainted) and pre-painted randoms to mix it up a bit. Plus they were relatively inexpensive.

I liked the idea that you could get more than one battle in, in under 2 hours, was pretty attractive as far as play value.

The games you mentioned, while likely better are much more expensive to get the same size fighting force.

I won't say it's a great game, but it had high ambition.

  10. In case someone wanted to know more about Arcane Legions I did a pretty in depth review of it:

And more of a little battle report showing the game in full on play mode:

Sadly my hopes for some of the flaws being fixed never really were and I knew NOBODY who ever bought into the game. A shame because its pretty fun and has some really neat mechanics.
