I have a couple of museum catalogs from Japan and it looks like that NY show is only scratching the surface of the weird stuff they wore.
There are some similarly awesome German gothic armors out there too with goblin faces and horns.
Cool, but nothing beats the enormous codpiece on Henry VIII's armor in the Tower of London!
