RUST BEAR
# Encountered: 1 (1d4)
Alignment: Neutral
Movement: 120' (40')
AC: 6
HD: 5
Attacks: 2 claws, bite
Damage: d4/d4/d6
Save as: Fighter 2
Morale: 8
Hoard Class: VI
These enchanted animals appear to be grizzly bears with a coppery metallic sheen to their fur. Contact with a rust bear has the same effect as a rust monster, but these creatures do not hunger for or consume metals. If a rust bear hits a single target with both claw attacks it automatically hugs the victim for an additional 2d8 damage and any metallic armor worn is automatically rusted, no matter how powerful the enchantment.
PHASE BEAR
# Encountered: 1 (1d2)
Alignment: Neutral
Movement: 120' (40')
AC: 6
HD: 6
Attacks: 2 claws, bite
Damage: d4/d4/d6
Save as: Fighter 4
Morale: 8
Hoard Class: VI
Appearing as eerily translucent polar bears, all opponents of the phase bear are at -2 to hit due to its magical displacement abilities. Furthermore, the first strike against a phase bear always misses unless the attacker has access to true seeing magics. If a phase bear hits a single target with both claw attacks it automatically hugs the victim for an additional 2d8 damage, but this gives away the true position of the creature, negating the -2 to-hit penalty until the phase bear's next action.
WAR BEAST
# Encountered: 1d2 (1d2)
Alignment: Chaotic
Movement: 120' (40')
AC: 0
HD: 7
Attacks: 2 buzzsaws, bite
Damage: d12/d12/d8
Save as: Fighter 7
Morale: 10
Hoard Class: XVIII
Servants of the sword-god Nenguzei, these bipedal demon-bears have plating similar to the bulette and giant spinning buzzsaws instead of forepaws. If a war beast hits a single target with both saw attacks it automatically hugs the victim for an additional 2d20 damage. Any creature of less than 3 hit dice must save versus fear or flee in terror from these maniacal rampaging cyber-ursines.
A Return to the Stars
-
After a veeeeerrrryyyy long, and mostly unplanned, hiatus, Stuart and I got
together to play more Stargrave in recent days. It was good! It was also a
bit ...
OMG THIS IS AWESOME!!! :D
ReplyDeleteOh Fuck! I think my players are going to have to contend with a WAR BEAST asap!
ReplyDeleteBear related...I love the psychic black bear in "Hiero's Journey."
SHAVED BEAR
ReplyDelete# Encountered: 1
Alignment: Neutral
Movement: 120' (40')
AC: 7
HD: 2
Attacks: 2 claws, bite
Damage: d4/d4/d6
Save as: Fighter 2
Morale: 1
Hoard Class: VI
These animals are usually encountered singly, and are often recently escaped from a circus or gypsy troupe. Shaved bears will behave in an unpredictable fashion, often fleeing out of shame, yet also capable of desperate berserker-like attacks. Contact with a shaved bear has the same effect as an aged gypsy hooker, but these creatures do not hunger for or consume cheap jewelry. If a shaved bear hits a single target with both claw attacks it automatically hugs the victim for an additional 2d8 damage as the victim is scraped by the bear’s stubble.
Shakespeare would agree. "Exit, pursued by a bear..." sounds like a great theme for PCs, too :)
ReplyDeleteThey're "nature's fish slapping tanks" as Seanbaby once said...
ReplyDeleteYay for bears.
In our games there is one monster that strikes fear in even the bravest player the Axe-Bear!
ReplyDeleteThe Axe Bear originates form a near TPK in a random encounter with two completely normal bears on the way to the BEG's layer, which as luck would have it was in a cave.
As the party explored we couldn't stop talking about bears. I mean we were in a CAVE, bears live in caves. We fought off dragons before, how could a mere bears menace such seasoned explorers? Clearly they had some sort of super bears. What if the Wizard sent the bear after us? Could we be dealing with a Bear-Mage?
And then the torches started to burn out (several of the better equipped characters had become bear chow.) Something big and lumbering entered the cavern. The Fighter screamed. the figure charges. And the only thing he sees as the figure bears down on him is an Axe bearly miss his head, and he screams "Axe-Bear!"
It turned out to be an ogre, but the Axe-Bear has been the boogy man in our games ever since.
At one point, I was in need of an monster fast.
ReplyDeleteSo, I created the Cole Bear, a bear made of coal with a breath weapon. It's also a play on the name of Stephen Colbert and his dislike of bears.
I once menaced the players in a Savage Worlds fantasy game with a 30' long, metallic skinned, half dragon fire breathing bear who attempted to trap them in a raging forest fire.
ReplyDeleteYou can see the mini I used for it here, in the foreground next to the blue dice.
I need to come up with an excuse to bring the ol' doom bear out again...
when is Jon Stewart going to get credit for the bear with chainsaws

Two heads are cool for ettins, etc. so I threw a two-headed cave bear into a module once. That extra bite per round makes a BIG difference!
ReplyDeleteAwesome indeed.
ReplyDeletePhase bear is evil. You could have all kinds of hit & run fun with that.
War Beast is demented fun, may have to put that in a game soon...
