new, improved Wessex map

Click on the thimbnail below to see my latest version of totally fakey southwest England.

I think I'm slowly getting less sucky at Hexographer.  It's definitely the best hex mapping tool I've ever played around with.

  1. Cool map. While I could probably figure it out by reverse osmosis (or something like that,) what is your scale?

  3. @Jeff - Ah thanks. Looking at it, I was thinking that it didn't seem in 25 scale at all, but 6 didn't work either.

I keep on forgetting how tiny that little island is. :)

  4. Very nice. Looks almost like my Pendragon map hanging over my desk.

  5. I forgot that Restormel was not just a place invented by Judges Guild.

Very cool map, it has nice ambiance to it.

  7. Nice work! :)

As an aside, you'll probably make a lot of Cornish people quite angry as the area you've shown is (mostly) Cornwall (the left hand bit). It's part of England that feels it should be an independent state like Wales or Scotland. Wessex was more over to the right.

I hope the die hard CNLA loonies don't come after you for your lovely fakey map!

  8. Rob: I understand the concern. I didn't label Cornwall on my map for two reasons. 1) I know where Cornwall (and Wales) are, so I don't really need that marked on my map. 2) Cornwall was part of Wessex in at least some versions of Thomas Hardy's system, and he is my model for the setting.

Hardy pretty much considered Devon, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Somerset, Dorset and Hampshire as Wessex proper. Though earlier works seem to have Wessex = Dorset. Cornwall is called Off Wessex at one point and Lyonesse at another. Tintagel had a personal significance for him. If I recall correctly he first met his wife at a church there.

  9. I've been trying to break down the old map into smaller hexes a la the Welsh Piper's system. You've just made that way easier for me. Thanks.
