I think you need to add a Runequest tag at 0D&D as well it's pretty much an effort to add realism to the basic D&D combat system by the author of the Perrin Conventions.
I was making a cleaned-up version from the other post, adding T&T and combining stuff that didn't need to be in different boxes ("1.5E"). Finished before I saw this post...
Don't forget The Fantasy Trip and its predecessors. I suppose Das Schwarze Auge deserves mention too.
Runequest and Empire of the Petal Throne are awkward customers because whatever about the systems, both the Tékumel and Glorantha settings apparently began life as Tolkienesque world-building exercises with no thought of using them for roleplaying. In fact it seems that both settings predate Chainmail. (That's all according to Wikipedia anyway...)
The point of my original chart-monkeying was to show if X game interests you than maybe you could Y a chance, with emphasis primarily on the new retro-clones et al. That's why, for example, I draw a dashed line from AD&D to Holmes Companion. If you like AD&D but want something less heavy duty, I think the Holmes Companion is the smart pick.
For my mark-up the point wasn't really to show historical influence or lines of descent, just what games are conceptually related.
The Perrin Conventions should actually be a separate entry feeding out of OD&D and into Holmes Basic, Arduin, and Runequest (if it's on there). This is an important piece of research Foster did.
I feel silly saying this, but I think Hargrave himself would have taken umbrage at the drug connection to Arduin.
Looking for some adventure roleplaying in or around Champaign-Urbana, Illinois? I currently run the original version of Traveller every other Wednesday at Armored Gopher Games in Urbana.
Best game store in Urbana, IL.
"You should all review Jeff Rients threefold model to even begin understanding my superiour insight."
"Man, is there anything Jeff CAN'T do when it comes to gaming? This guy is like a critical 20 every roll. Jeff can bite the heads offa five game geeks, including their sorry-ass DM, and spit 'em into a large duffel bag ONE AT A TIME!...that's just the kind of messed up bastard he is! You think yer a gamer, punk? Well..do ya? Jeff will depants your weasel-ass right in front of your grandma."

ReplyDeleteYou've created a monster!
ReplyDeleteEspecially since I see the Basic Fantasy RPG as a fusion of Moldvay with D&D 3e
A monster, I say!

I guess we can stop, then.
ReplyDeleteWhat, why not expand to Traveller, Runequest, Boot Hill, Top Secret, Gamma World, Champions, Rolemaster, TFT/GURPS, RIFTS, Torg, Jorune, Vampire...
ReplyDeleteDon´t think so!
ReplyDeleteI laughed out loud at the explanation for Arduin.
ReplyDeleteIts as close a rationale as we'll ever have.
ReplyDeleteYou so crazy! :p

"So crazy that dude must be on drugs" is a cheap laugh line that I do not routinely use, but having been recently on the receiving end myself, I felt I could get away with it.
ReplyDeleteI'll stand by my review! Asteroid 1618 does read like someone has deprived the Western World of narcotics by taking them all with a fine Merlot.
