link of the day

"Look, Becca, the Faire combines many ostensibly disparate eras, including the Renaissance, Medieval times, the days of yore, the days of Conan, the Dark Ages, the Pirates of the Caribbean, albums by Tool and the Insane Clown Posse, the Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim block of programming, World of Warcraft, Monty Python’s Holy Grail, the Legend of Zelda, shitty new age Celtic music, the bleachers at a NASCAR race and, finally, all those attention whores in your high school drama club. You can’t be all hung up on authenticity or classification. You just have to wander through the crowds, wide-eyed and innocent, enjoying the swirling, festive mélange of totally made-up cultures. And also you have to eat one of those giant turkey legs, so I can take a picture and use it to make jokes on the Internet."

That truly was a rinky dink Faire, but I laughed all the way through.

Don´t want to sound arrogant, but our "Mittelaltermarkt" beats a Ren Faire like this any day.

And "Mittelaltermärkte" are already mocked and scorned.

  2. Jeff, thanks for the link, and for providing an entertaining blog yourself. Your Five Overlooked RPGs post sent me scurrying off to Wikipedia for research, as well as triggered some exellent flashbacks to heated arguments on Villains and Vigilantes vs. Champions, as well as hearty debate on the best way to combine the latter with Car Wars. Thus, I was spared at least two hours of actual productive work today -- a fine outcome, by any standard.

Please tell me you had a copy of Autoduel Champions back in the day. As a kid I almost bought a copy of that even though at the time I didn't play Car Wars or Champions. After all, we're talking about a supplement designed to combine a superhero game with a futuristic vehicular homicide boardgame. Both games could suck and the results would still be awesome.

  6. I don't know if it's unbelievably awesome or soul-crushingly sad, but if I remember correctly, we had already worked out a system to combine the two by the time Autoduel Champions came out, and preferred our own creation.

My character was kind of like Batman but instead of a cape and pointy ears he had stylish pictures of skulls on his costume and instead of a utility belt he wielded a dark cloud of smoke that could be, like, formed into fists and ramrods and stuff and instead of a Batmobile he had a shiny black 1972 Buick Wildcat with more skull pictures and lasers and machine guns and flame throwers and oil slicks and grenades and armor plating all on the front for smahsing into things and he would kill you and and and...

I, uhh... I think I need to go lie down.
