Wizardly Wednesday: Who the What?

Aruman the Red, from Ralph Bakshi's adaptation of The Lord of the Rings.

The name of this dude was changed from Saruman to Aruman to avoid the Saruman/Sauron confusion that tripped me up the first time I tackled Tolkien as a kid.  Why he needed red robes, I don't know.  Maybe it looked better with that grey beard?

  1. I remember being confused by that when I was a kid. They called him Sauruman a couple of times and then went to calling him Auruman.

I still love that movie, with all of it's flaws. The Nazgul were much more frightening than the ones in the Pete Jackson movie.

  3. Yeah I remember them using both names in the movie, too. It's been a while since I've seen it, though. "Wizards" was much more... erm... entertaining as a kid. ;-)

  7. When beard and wig blend, you know it's a wizard you've got.

  9. Auruman, sounds a bit like Ahriman, would make sense.
