Ah, good old Caldwell :)
ReplyDeleteAt Gen Con 1993, I asked him if the "Caldwell Gem" was a deliberate signature feature of his work, or if it just worked out that way unconsciously, and he told me that it began accidentally, but that TSR's art director quickly asked him to perpetuate it, so that most of the Caldwell Gems were deliberate at TSR's request.
I think that was one of the last great industry mysteries for me. It was a magical day learning the truth :)
