I assumed they ate grass or herbs or something like that.

  1. One of my old DM's used to explain this away with all the excess predators subsisting on trolls when they couldn't find other food. They regenerate, so as long as you don't finish them off completely you can just gnaw on them a bit until you're full and leave the rest to grow back.

If course, you have to be nasty enough to casually gnaw on a troll in the first place for this to work.

I'm definitely adding a herd of unicorns feeding on the flesh of an imprisoned troll to my game world.

  2. Or they could resort to feeding on cadavers. I am certain unicorns do. Remember mad unicorn?

  3. Yes, more enlightened Leopards do eat grass - but I'm afraid Unicorns are strictly meat only.

  4. I somehow feel like there are probably more potential carnivores than herbivores. I remember long ago, how amazed I was to find out that bees will eat meat after they started going after our picnic meats. Or a girlfriend I had a couple years ago whose family had chickens and she told me that if she were to drop dead in the cages while feeding them, they would pick her bones clean like piranha fish. But will horses do this in lieu of other food? Will cows? I bet unicorns will.
