      ICE's Middle Earth RPG. I would guess Jeff just kludged in D&D classes rather than the default classes (warrior, scout, etc.)

      Actually it's from Rolemaster 2nd edition Character Law with all the umpteen classes cut except the original four.

    yeah, it'd work for me :)
    I actually enjoyed MERP/RM - playing the game was a breeze, level ups were just a point buy thingy..
    Running was a tad more challenging - but the creatures & treasures books (bestiary etc) made things easy.

    I loved the supplements but the ICE system (or even MERP) made my head spin. Even years later playing online with a group of experts in the system. I hear Against the Darkmaster makes it easier, so I'd like to give that a try. But I'd really like a neat mesh of ICE with my old-school 1e AD&D style.

    Almost exactly this is RoleMaster Express, which was their starter kit of RoleMaster Classic, with MERP-like combat tables. Animist instead of Cleric. All the options were added in zine-like pamphlets over the next few years, then they quit selling it for license reasons.
