Metal with lyrics entirely in Tolkien's Black Speech!
There's a point in there where the synthesizers are doing a deep-pitched horn sort of thing and it ends up sounding to me like the oompa of a polka tuba. But many metal songs with a sense of the grandiose tend to teeter toward the ridiculous.

These often get picked as the best supermarket mince pies by the gutter
press, so let's see. The pastry has a good texture, firm but also soft, but

I can't wait to see the singing competition between these guys and the Klingons.
ReplyDeleteThe problem was that our model of Stonehenge was in danger of being trampled by a Leprechaun!
ReplyDeleteThere is also Za Frumi which has concept albums based on the adventures of orcs in a Tolkien-esque world.
ReplyDeleteYou need to get out more man.
Amon Amarth is a Swedish death metal band that sings nearly exclusively about vikings, and their name is some sort of translation of Mount Doom.
ReplyDeleteTolkien has a pretty big following amongst metal fans.
ancientvaults, you are cracking me up. Only down here in the bowels of the nerdosphere could the phrases "get out more man" and "listen to more metal bands that sing about orcs" mean the same thing
ReplyDeleteZa frumi is more new-agey/ambient-type music than metal. But yeah, in black speech.
ReplyDeleteBeing enlightened and out more, I think I'll drop some recommendations.

Blind Guardian
The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets
Blind Guardian I discovered in a music video for the anime, Record of Lodoss War which is based on someone's D&D campaign. They even have one about Elric. Not as loud as Amon Amarth.
Hillside Thickets are a goofy garage rock band that sing about the Cthulhu mythos. (They even had some kind of promotional thing with a cthulhu RPG where different rules are in affect depending on which song was playing in the background.)
And of course there's Zep, Sabbath and BOC.
And I love how you totally picked up on that groove, Jeff.
ReplyDeleteIt must be the New Agey-ish part of Za Frumi (which, I am not arguing with you Mike, I had just never thought of them as New Age)that after about an hour makes me want to grab a large ax and rage into Wal*Mart.
Not like that is a bad thing.
I think that pretentious and ridiculous metal is what brought many of us into metal.
ReplyDeleteMe, the wife and a friend once went to the opera with a friend of ours. Tagging along with him were a bunch of guys into death metal.
Guess what kind of opera? Wagner.
Need I say more? :)
