  1. I laughed, I cried, my mouth watered at the rat on a stick.

The Moldvay encounter generator is a great find. Being able to pull a string of encounters and either pick your favorite or even fill out the scenario for a nights worth of gaming is gold.

  2. That cook-book article is fantastic. It encapsulates everything about RPG forums that forces me to undergo a "two minute hate" every other day or so.

  3. Someone's Java-fu is a little off. They effed up their random number generator variables to not take into account penalties reducing HPs to zero. I rolled up an encounter with five goblins, one of whom had "0" hp. Other than that though, it's pretty neat. I might actually try it out some time.

  4. I could build an encounter out of five gobbos with zero hp.

"You open the door and see 5 dead goblins. There's no sign of violence. The little buggers are just dead."

  5. "...If geeks talked about cookbooks the way they talk about RPG books ..."

To this day, the most hateful flamewar I've ever read on Usenet was an extended month-long argument between the mayonnaise and Miracle Whip camps. Really. Seriously. It got hugely personal almost instantly, with people wading in spitting venom on both sides, and it seemed to go on forever. This was not - repeat, not - an unusual event in the annals of food-geekdom.

And heck, I've got relatives who've not spoken in years because of a dire incident of cookie similarity at a charity bake-sale.

Every area of interest has people who take things Very Seriously in a destructive way; it's by no means limited to SF/Fantasy communities, despite the (equally destructive) cliche.

  6. Granted, although I think a more likely explanation is that they are generating a random number using mod-8 minus one instead of just mod-7...

Oh, I agree that it was unintentional. But mod-7 isn't quite the right solution, is it? I've always operated under the assumption that 1-1 HD meant both a '1' and a '2' on the die indicated a 1 hp foe.

  8. I hearby swear that yon Moldvay Encounter Combobulator is a totally radical.

The moldvay adventure generator is sweet. My adventure has the PC's rescuing someone and the following 4 encounters:

    1. Pool of water with magic effects

    2. 12 Halflings

    3. 5 Killer Bees

    4. Pool of water with magic effects

That's totally awesome. I'm picturing a gang of Halflings who have a lair inside a giant tree in the middle of the swamp. The bees live in the tree and as some of their honey has dripped into the swamp it's created a few magic pools.

Hrm, good point - 1d8-1, if it's a 0, it becomes one, so you've got double your normal chances of getting a "1". You'd have to put some sort of "if" catch in there then and do mod-8, but "if" 0 hp, then hp is 1.

Blah, enough code gabbing. It's still awesome!

  11. Another note of thanks for linking the Moldvay generator! Sweetness, and it'll come in useful for my new campaign.

You playing some Moldvay/Cook soon? Let us know how it goes! I'm probably about to start a campaign myself.

  13. Love the cookbook/RPG comparison site. The chocolate chip cookies from the 1st Betty Crocker Cookbook were the best, but nobody use that recipe since the revised editions came out.
Miracle Whip Rules, by the way.

  14. jim: I'm in the "both, please" camp, myself, which is why I never understand those flamewars.

I'm in the "both, please" camp on most things, though. (Stuffing vs. Mashed Potatoes, etc)

  15. Hi, Trollsmyth,

I don't know when this game will kick off. I've been posting some stuff on my campaign at

...unfortunately, messing up my back and some baby-sitting for the band has slowed down my work at transcribing my notebook and finishing my maps a bit in the past two weeks.
