Today I discovered Elizabeth on the couch holding her game boy, playing Pokemon, while in her lap a Scooby-Doo show was playing on her DVD. Meanwhile on the TV was some SpongeBob. The thing is, I'm pretty sure she was actually following both shows and playing the game without tuning out any of them. She can't pay attention to her old man long enough for him to wipe her nose, but she can follow two TV shows and a video game with no problem.
Later I made her a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. She lifted one slice of bread and informed me I had made it wrong. "The peanut butter goes on top." I flipped the sandwich over and she was pleased as punch.
Recently we got a good deal on a PlayStation 2 and
Guitar Hero III. Now her favorite song in the whole world is "Slow Ride" by Fog Hat. She was like negative 26 years old when that song came out. Incidentally, I usually choose Lars Umlaut as my character when playing GH III. For those of you not familiar with the game, he looks like this:
Elizabeth immediately declared him to be "Mogar", the rock 'n' roll persona adopted by Billy's dad in the episode "Battle of the Bands" from
The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy. Here's the original Mogar:
The resemblance is striking, isn't it?
"Slow Ride" _is_ a pretty solid song :)
ReplyDeleteI'm about to tell you something you already know:
ReplyDeleteYour kid rawks.
My kid, Lily, loves her some Oingo Boingo. She's really into Thomas Dolby right now, too, particularly "Europa and the Pirate Twins"; she also really enjoys "Blitzkrieg Bop" by The Ramones and the cover of "Robot man" performed by The Epoxies. She recognizes Duran Duran songs when she hears them, and can spot a Star Wars toy as soon as it's in line-of-sight.
This, in the midst of her recent and joyous discovery of "Frosty The Snowman", which she's seen 6 times in the last 4 days.
She's 3.
Jeff,
ReplyDeleteI could be wrong, and I say this out of concern. It sounds like your child is developing a severe lack of focus. Right now it might be cute, but seems to me her inability to pay attention to you but follow three Audio Visual stimuli simultaneously indicates that she can't focus on one thing for too long. If she can't focus on you now, and if this is a state to trait situation, you could be setting yourself up for some serious heartache in the future. I am not a psychologist, just calling it how I see it. But then again your kid could just be a Genius, but I would want to be sure.
I appreciate the concern. Focus actually has been an ongoing issue with Elizabeth. We been to child development specialists and she's been through a battery of screenings and test going on for over a year now. I took this little episode as a good sign, because she was so effortlessly able to multitask. Prior to starting treatment she couldn't even single-task sometimes. Maybe I am misinterpreting, but as always I'm monitoring her behavior looking for patterns to report back to the doctors.
