What minis manufacturer, currently in production or long gone, makes the shortest halflings? I got some 1:72 plastic fantasy figures (as mentioned
here many moons ago) for Christmas. The makers of these figures also offer packs of elves and dwarves, but no hobbity types. My attempts to google up 20mm halflings have failed. So now I'm looking for particularly small 25mm halflings, if anyone can recommend such. Metal or plastic is fine, but absolutely no footwear, please.
I'm pretty sure the old Minifigs hobbits must have been minute when I was collecting my LOTR Hobbit Army as a kid. (if that's any help)
ReplyDeleteI found some hits on Grenadier and Viking Forge. Googling 25mm Hobbits got me some great results, too.
ReplyDeleteYou might want to try http://www.megaminis.com/ They sell true 25mm figures, including halflings--and halfling children, which might work for you.
ReplyDeleteAlso, look here: http://doc.frothersunite.com/minis/halflings.html
ReplyDeleteYou might try Michael at Classic Minis. He has the rights to most of the old Custom Cast and Dungeon Dweller lines. He moderates the heritage Yahoo forums and lists his figures for sale there, in an excel document.

Use 15mm miniatures? You could probably get some larger head fellows and call them halflings pretty easily.
ReplyDeleteHave you tried the Games Workshop hobbits? Their LotR models are a little smaller than their standard ranges, so might well fit, although probably not as well as the other suggestions here.
ReplyDeleteThe old Heritage figures (including their Middle Earth line) could be good bets too, they were true 25mm (but a bit on the big side).
ReplyDeleteOne thing to consider would be using bulky 15mm humans too.
You might be able to find the old Grenadier Halfling set on ebay. I had that back in the day, and they fit perfectly with everybody else's figures.
ReplyDeleteI sculpted two 20mm hobbits in Blue Tac modeled on you and James M. for a one shot in Carcosa. They got badly fucked up in the game but you can have the remains if you want. No footwear (visible).
ReplyDeleteThe old ral partha halflings from the 70's are the smallest 25mm figures I know of. They're nice sculpts, although quite simple and on the thin side for hobbits.

Does anyone else think that screen capture of Bilbo looks like a giant ghost-condom is trying to attack him?
ReplyDeleteOn topic, MegaMinis has some pretty good deals on halflings. I've been meaning to order a bunch of stuff from them. Lots of animals too, so you could have a Halfling M-U with a chicken or sow familiar.
I second hunting down some old ral-partha halflings they were certainly small and well sculpted.
ReplyDeleteOld heritage miniatures are a bit chunky but the halflings were still properly small as well,
e.g. Essex miniatures have a large ancients range, which has a number of 15mm folk with simple weapons and bare feet. Add a cloak and a backpack, and you have a halfling.
ReplyDeleteMega Minis and LOTR minis are going to be too big for 20mm. I would go with Splintered Light miniatures technically they are for 18mm but I bet they would fit right in.

I believe Mirlton has the rights to most of the Grenadier models. Rights is probably too strong a word, more like they're producing the minis. From what I've gathered Mirlton is producing many of the old Dragon Lords minis with and without the permission of the sculptors, who in some cases actually have the rights to the models. Worth looking into.
ReplyDeleteI use 15mm hobbits from Irregular, Tin Soldier, and Magister Militum because they are small and rotund.
ReplyDeleteMost of the 25mm halflings I've seen are almost 20mm tall, which brings them too close to the new image of the tall, fit and slender shoe-wearing halflings for my tastes.
