Encounter Critical scenario starters (d12)

1.  What if Cobra Commander was trying to conquer outer space?
2.  Remember how near the end of Excalibur ol’ Merlin became a dream ghost?  Somebody really ought to go into the Dreamlands and rescue that guy.
3. What if the galaxy was patrolled by the Justice League of the Federation (Kirk is Superman, Spock is Batman, etc.*)
4.  Re-watch The Wizard of Oz and keep repeating to yourself this mantra: A Primitive Robodroid Pioneer with a War Axe.  Enlightenment will follow.
5.  What if vampires were sort of anti-Kryptonians, i.e. powerless in yellow sunlight but ultra-rad under the rays of a red sun?
6.  Take a romantic comedy/chick flick/etc. and reuse the plot in deadly earnest.  (Example: Steel Magnolias involves a woman who may not survive giving birth to her dynasty’s heir, a rich heiress who spends her money on whatever catches her fancy, a grumpy witch with a giant hound, a crazy woman who makes cakes out of exotic animals, a doxy who finds religion and Tom Skerritt with a gun.  Seriously, you could make a whole friggin’ campaign offa that flick.)
7.  What if black holes were really the feeding orifices of some extradimensional predator?
8.  What if Galactus decided that the Death Star was too big a threat to his food supply?
9.  What if 2010: A Space Odyssey ended with Earth being invaded by giant cannibal space babies?
10.  Samuel L. Jackson survived that fall in Episode III, he’s got a wicked pirate hook hand and he’s organizing the dregs of Coruscant undersociety to kick some Imperial ass.
11.  Three words: Ork-Melmac War.
12.  What if Harry Mudd sold your favorite planet to the Daleks?

  1. "What if Cobra Commander was trying to conquer outer space?"

Been there, done that... although that all happened in the 90's and as far as most Joe fans are concern, anything from the early to mid 90's never happened! (by the way, dose his spacesuit look like one of those aerodynamic ski-suits? LOL)

  2. I think that first entry needs its own sub-table. I will help get it started.

    Cobra Commander wants to . . .
    1. conquer space.

    2. lay siege to a major metropolis using suicide bomber Elvis impersonators.

    3. form a league of super evil geniuses with the likes of Krang (from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,) Khan (a.k.a. Khaaaaaan!,) Sauron, etc.

    4. meet Elric of Melnibone.

  3. Justice League of the Federation? Been there, done that. :)

In an old Star Trek game from way back, one of my players indicated his character collected the holo-novels, action figures and other paraphernalia of the fictional hero 'Captain Federation'.

A few years (of real time) later we decided to run a superhero game set in the Star Trek universe featuring Captain Federation and his United Force of Protectors - the team included an Andorian Batman (based on a Tiberian Bat of course), a super-psychic Vulcan named Pon Nom (aka 'The All Knowing'), Beam, The Human Transporter and a super skilled female spy called 'The Intelligence Agent'.

The team was later joined by others including the super-speedster Transwarp, a shapeshifter and a female time traveler.

Uhura as Wonder Woman eh? May just have to get to work on that...

WV: Sedusin: What I would need to get to doin' if I saw me Uhura dressed as Wonder Woman.

  4. As an aside, am I the only one who thinks that a video game where you can assemble your own force of Joes or Cobra agents to carry out various missions would be absolutely fabulous? Think Marvel Ultimate Alliance, with Joes.

I used to think a GI JOE rpg would be cool too.... but possibly boring in the long term. Hard to say....

  5. Okay, since Cobra Commander in Space is old news, here's my thirteenth item:

What if Atlantis didn't sink, but instead they strapped anti-grav generators to the bottom of the continent and went on outer space adventures?

  7. "8. What if Galactus decided that the Death Star was too big a threat to his food supply?"

Or used it to microwave his dinners?

    Brilliant list!

  8. Heh, and I was going to drop by here anyway to pimp something likely of interest to old-school gamers, but it's going to (I think) interest EC fans particularly... my run through of an amazing, yet sadly forgotten, 1981 sci-fi game called "Star Rovers". Parts I and II are up.

    Part I:

  9. "Space is the place to punch Destro in the face."

The only good thing to come from the Star Brigade era.

  10. 7. What if black holes were really the feeding orifices of some extradimensional predator?

Close... the known universe is the bag that holds this beast... it feeds through black holes and watches us through suns.

That's why the sun gives you cancer.

  11. 9. What if 2010: A Space Odyssey ended with Earth being invaded by giant cannibal space babies?

Take the movie Feast, add some Cronenbergian goodness like The Brood, shake in a little It's Alive pathos and you got yourself some really twisted fun, friend Jeff!

Its all based on your taste. If you like "kitchen sink gaming" then the Sunbow cartoon would be really good, as it mixed sci-fi and fantasy (with magic and even Egyptian gods) like any other cartoon from the 80's, and was also kinky as hell! If you like hard-edged war-fiction and high-concept hardware, then you would really enjoy the Larry Hama comics. If you like that pulpy coldwar-era style of Johnny Quest (and fuzzy beards and kung-fu grips), then the classic Adventure Team would be to your liking (best played with Dogs of W*A*R).

  13. I personally think a "Hasbroverse" game based on the mid-80s cartoons would be 13 different kinds of awesome. Combine GI Joe w/Transformers, Gem, there was that one with the subterranean people, I think there were a few more, and you have a world of giant robots, paramilitary forces, action/spy rockstars, hidden demigods beneath the ground, and much more.

If I wasn't committed to actually *finishing* Earth Delta, as opposed to letting it be another one of my half-finished projects, I'd be on it...

  15. @Badger King:

There actually is an unofficial GI Joe RPG somewhere on the net.

    @Lizard:

Isn't that roughtly what Cartoon Action Hour is supposed to be?

  16. @anarchist -

    Yes, but:
    a)I'd love an "official" version.
b)CAH isn't crunchy enough for my tastes.

  17. Inspired by this post and the subsequent discussion, I've made a random table, 'Adventure Ideas From Cartoons'. It's on my site (www.apolitical.info/webgame/tables) in the 'Adventure Ideas' section if anyone's interested.
