So this is cool.

Last time my daughter had a play date with one of her little friends, the girl's mother cautiously broached the subject of her daughter's game group. My wife and I could tell she was very tentative in her approach out of concern that we were anti-gaming nutjobs, which amused us to no end. Amy politely explained that I am, in fact, a pro-gaming nutjob.

So now my daughter is in a game group of little girls who play the Faery's Tale rpg published by Green Ronin. Elizabeth's first session was today and she came back with a brief report. Her character is Sally Buttercup, a pixie with extraordinary luck. Sally and her friends live in a treehouse in a magic forest. Today's adventure centered on dealing with a band of careless hunters who were killing animals for sport rather than food. The party enlisted the aid of a nearby dragon to scare the huntsmen away.

Needless to say, I'm pretty jazzed about this development.

  1. Nothing says serious power gamer like pixies calling upon a dragon to deal with hunters. :)

Nice to hear the next generation is in good hands.

  4. You an anti-gaming nutjob: O the irony. But what a cool coincidence. May all her rolls be 20s. If they use 20s. And if rolling 20 is good. Er, you know what I mean.

  5. That is cool. On a somewhat related note, I'm running my boys (6 and 8 yrs old) through Under Xylarthen's Tower.

  6. In an amazing coincidence, I ran a Fairy-themed game for my family this weekend, and made heavy use of Faery's Tale, although I used rules from The Pool for PC creation and running the game.

I wrote up a session report, here.

  8. That's awesome! I've played Faery's Tale with my daughter, and more recently, revamped that system to use as a Harry Potter RPG.

For her 9th birthday, her and two friends exposed the new Dark Arts teacher as an evil wizard. It worked very well.

  9. "Pro-gaming nutjob." Hee!

Hurray for Elizabeth. May she (and Sally B.) thrive and enjoy this goofy pastime for many years to come.

  10. I think you should sit with the group before their next session and make sure they fully grasp the intricacies of your Threefold Model and are able to place their own playstyle/system choice into the appropriate context in the Model. You want to get them on the road to incoherent gaming early!

  12. "Not in print?" I've almost picked this game up on two occasions, at two separate game shops, within the last three or so months!

I wonder how ling it's been sitting on the shelf. Guess I'll have to go pick it up before it disappears!

I picked it up from a local game store (Fat Ogre) several months ago. If it went out of print, it must have done so fairly recently. It's available from Green Ronin and Amazon.

  16. How old is she? I'm wondering if that might be a good vehicle to get my 8-year-old daughter into the cult, er, hobby.

  18. Faery's Tale Deluxe is one of my favorite games ever produced. I did some houserules to expand it and make it more in line with a more mature audience (although one who are still kids at heart).

As I've said before, any game where you can fell crops is a kick butt game.
