You know who continues to be awesome?

Goodman Games with their Dungeon Crawl Classics line, that's who. Dig these upcoming releases.

"Covering a wide range of levels, each of the adventures revolves around a treasure map of some kind, and the book includes beautiful handouts to bring the maps to life in the hands of your gamers."

That's the kind of product a lazy-ass DM like me can really get some use out of!

Dungeon Crawl Classics presents

Blackdirge's Dungeon Denizens

"With more than 50 modules available, the Dungeon Crawl Classics are the most popular adventures available today. It was inevitable that the authors would come up with a couple new monsters along the way! This creature compilation features more than 100 of the best monsters to appear in the DCC series and other Goodman Games products, selected and updated by monster artiste Aeryn “Blackdirge” Rudel."

You know what? If Goodman offered a DCC subscription plan I'd seriously consider sending them a bunch of money. Best of luck to Paizo and all with their new Pathfinder gig, but the DCC line is much more in line with my tastes.

  3. I really like GG's stuff too, but that "Book of Treasure Maps" is a pretty blatant knock-off of the old Judge's Guild "Book of Treasure Maps" by Paul Jaquays. So no points for originality, but I'm sure it's still worth getting.

Jaquays worte some classic dungeon crawls back in the day, like "BoTM", "Caverns Of Thracia", and my favorite, "Dark Tower". As dungeon crawls go they still stand up well.

My thoughts exactly. Besides, if innovation was my top priority I wouldn't be looking at the DCC books.

Heck, Points in Space 1 is a pretty blatant knock-off of the CityBook series from Flying Buffalo.

Is that a bad thing? I must have missed the memo :)

  6. As long as everybody doing the imitating picks awesome stuff to emulate and puts their own spin on it, I say carry on! As a GM everything I run is pastiche to some extent or another.

  7. Actually, I thought Book of Treasure Maps was the old JG book -- remember, the JG update are all being done by Goodman Games now, as part of the reprecussions from Necromancer Games not making any money off of Caverns of Thracia.

Goodman Games is publishing revised versions of three classic JG adventures... Thieves of Fortress Badabaskor (already out), Citadel of Fire (out soon), and Dark Tower (later this year). If sales are good enough, Joe might do more revisions through Eostros (Greg and Kara Geilman's company). Necro-Paizo will publish a seriously kick-ass revision of Tegel Manor later this summer. And Adventure Games Publishing (my own company) will publish entirely new Wilderlands material in the Wilderlands of High Adventure series (for Castles & Crusades). I'm releasing a 16-page town booklet, Tell Qa: Northern Bastion of the Falling Empire, through Free RPG Day. Though designed for C&C, it would be a simple matter of conversion to standard d20 Fantasy.

Hi -- I'm the Graphic Artist / Designer who did all the layout (and some of the art) for "Blackdirge's Dungeon Denizens," and I thought you might like to know that it is now available as a PDF through RPG Now. If you're interested, you can check it out here. (The print version will follow in another month or two, as I understand it.)

If you visit the Dungeon Denizens page on Goodman's site, you can get a better view of the finished cover image than the one on RPG Now.

WARNING: Depending on their age, some gamers may be given a slight flashback by the title font. The effect was calculated -- NOT a lack of originality, but a deliberate nod to the past -- and it shouldn't produce more than a mild seizure. ;)

Incidentally, I stumbled across your blog here while Googling the term "Blackdirge's Dungeon Denizens," looking to see whether anybody had reviewed it anywhere yet. (No one has, by the way; but it only got released just yesterday, so that's no surprise.)
