If Bob's player is a jerk then take the beat stick to him. But that's an issue I try to have addressed before the player even builds a character.

"I expect people that I know to be creative, experienced or both to try to do better."

This is where we disagree. I think there are plenty of cool people in the hobby that don't want to do better. They are perfectly content playing Bob. I want them to enjoy the game as much as everybody else. In my experience pushing them to 'try harder' will end up alienating them.

"A truly creative player can begin play with a simple background like "He's a warrior from the Frozen Northern Wastes" and over time end up with a detailed, three-dimensional character"

I don't know if I qualify as 'truly creative', but that's my favorite way of fleshing out a PC. Start with a simple concept and fill in the details during play.Jeff Rientshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17493878980535235896noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7652921.post-1157590838047345182006-09-06T20:00:00.000-05:002006-09-06T20:00:00.000-05:00You make some good points, but I have to add that ...You make some good points, but I have to add that I think that whether Bob is welcome or not depends on Bob's player.

In my opinion, Bob would be far more likely to be embraced were he the product of a neophyte roleplayer or someone who just isn't that creative.

I expect people that I know to be creative, experienced or both to try to do better.

That being said, this is a standard I apply to character names, but not necessarily to character profession choices and backgrounds.

A truly creative player can begin play with a simple background like "He's a warrior from the Frozen Northern Wastes" and over time end up with a detailed, three-dimensional character, and if the player isn't that creative then I am willing to certainly let things slide.Matt Staggshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08891067785725540392noreply@blogger.com
